Daegu (sometimes Romanised as Taegu, and officially named Daegu Metropolitan City) is the third largest metropolitan area in South Korea, covers a larger geographical area than Seoul, and is home to over 2.5 million people. The city is the capital and principal city of Gyeongsangbuk-do, although it is separately governed.
Daegu is located in south-eastern Korea about 80 km from the coast, and about 53 km northwest of Busan, and is a fashionable and technologically advanced city, mixing fast paced neon districts with traditional medicine markets and ancient temples. Daegu is also known as the home of Korean baseball and as the home of the most Miss Korea beauty pageant winners in history (maybe thanks to plastic surgery being so prevalent here...)
Daegu has a humid subtropical climate and is one of the warmest areas in South Korea. The mountains surrounding the basin where the city is located trap hot and humid air. Conversely, in winter, cold air is trapped there. The area receives little precipitation except during the rainy season (in summer), and is sunny throughout much of the year – helping the area’s production of fruit such as apples and melons.

For tourist information in the city, head to one of the many tourist offices (at the airport, at Dongdaegu Station, in the downtown area, at the herbal medicine market, and also at Duryu Park). They can provide English maps and brochures.
