Mokpo (목포)

Mokpo is a medium-sized city (pop. 260,000 approx.) in South Jeolla Province (Jeollanam-do), on the southwestern coast of Korea. Many visitors come to the area to catch ferries to the surrounding islands, especially in the summer.
The movie ‘Mokpo Hangbu’ (Mokpo Harbour) slightly tarnished the reputation of this quiet port city, by portraying it as the centre of organized crime in Korea.
Mokpo (or more specifically, it’s neighbouring County of Yeongam) has recently been receiving a lot of press attention, due to the construction of Korea’s first Formula One Grand Prix racetrack there, completed and first used in October 2010.
Weather in Mokpo is in some ways typical of Korea – hot, humid summers and cold dry winters. However, due to it’s proximity to the sea, Mokpo can also experience increased fog and winds, especially in the spring and autumn; and increased rain in summer.
