Yang Yang (양양) (population c3000) is located on the Northeastern seaboard of Gangwon-do province. The region is famous for its pine mushrooms which grow wild in the surrounding mountains, and an amusingly large rotating plastic mushroom at the Eastern entrance to the town pays homage to this fact.
The locals are a friendly bunch and currently view the small population of six foreigners with friendly interest. The area enjoys slightly cooler weather than other parts of Korea due to its close proximity to the mountains, and a sea breeze in summer keeps humidity down - though it can still get sticky.
